BUSHFIRES are mostly caused by people around us. People burn to prepare farmlands, to protect ruminants from reptiles, hunting for animals by kids and adults, facilitate the growth of new grass for livestock).

WHY IT IS NOT GOOD:

❎ Bushfires reduce crop yield

❎ Bushfires reduce soil fertility

❎ Bushfires destroy crops

❎ Bushfires destroy farmlands and the natural vegetation

❎ Bushfires in the long term lead to a reduction in rainfall

❎ It is an offence to set bush fire or not to report a person who started or cause bush-fire

WHAT CAN WE DO?

✅ Stop indiscriminate burning

✅ Sensitize the community through environmental awareness programmes

✅ Form fire volunteer guards

✅ When slash, do not burn

✅ Leave the residue to decompose to add nutrient and organic matter to the soil

Let’s join forces this dry season to drastically reduce the incidence of bushfires. The time to start is NOW.
